God Bless America, Again

God Bless America, Again CoverGod Bless America, Again was written by Deanne Casperson, a choir teacher at Blackfoot High School in Blackfoot, Idaho. The song was inspired by the September 11, 2001 attacks. At that time Deanne’s son was in basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. She also observed the effect this tragedy had upon her students as they watched it unfold on television in her classroom. These events and her personal feelings compelled Deanne to write this song - the creation of the lyrics and melody became consuming.

However, one verse continued to remain unfinished until she read a line from President George W. Bush’s speech at the National Day of Prayer service. The line read, "The commitment of our fathers is the calling of our time." It was the missing line.

Deanne created an accompaniment and the song was recorded at the Simmons Media studios (now Bonneville Intermountain Radio Group) in Blackfoot, sung by 21 year-old Damian Hall, a student at Idaho State University, and Deanne’s former student. It immediately aired within Sunday morning radio programs, "Sounds of Sunday" and "Sounds of the Sabbath" in southeast Idaho, and throughout Utah.

It was first performed at Blackfoot High School’s Veterans’ Day assembly and received a standing ovation from its student body and visiting veterans. This inspired song has touched many audiences since that time. On February 22, 2002 it again brought a standing ovation as the Blackfoot High School A Cappella Choir performed it at the Lincoln Day Banquet in Pocatello, attended by Idaho Congressman Michael Simpson, Idaho Senator Larry Craig, and numerous state officials.

Bush Signs CDUpon request, 1,000 C.D.s were produced and many were sold. The profits were donated to the Legacy Fund, designated to help defray the cost of a school bond for a badly needed auditorium and gym at Blackfoot High School.

Three of the original C.D.s were also presented by Idaho Congressman Michael Simpson to President George W. Bush, who signed one of them and returned it.

Michael Leavitt of Caldwell, Idaho, added to Deanne’s accompaniment with additional instrumental tracks. Carl Watkins of Mountain America Sound recorded Damian and later recorded the Blackfoot High School Choirs directed by Susan Mann. All tracks were mixed and mastered by Carl in his home studio. Glenn Rawson, a local teacher, wrote and narrated the story about Patrick Henry, which is included on the C.D. Sue Fulmer of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin produced the artwork. All involved gave their time freely to produce this inspirational C.D.

It is hoped that the message of this song can reach all Americans. The freedoms of this land occurred through divine intervention. Our future continues to depend upon the blessings of divine intervention. God can and will bless America again.
